A critical piece of the "sustainability puzzle" is leadership, especially your Board of Directors. But how do you encourage more active board engagement? In this free webinar, we will take you through a dynamic process to assess the health and role of governance in your organization and obtain more meaningful engagement. We will discuss how to create an operations plan for stronger governance and the creation of your Board Policies Manual - your playbook for effective governance. FW: NCRCRD Webinar Announcement (21 Years of First Impressions)

First Impressions is a great community assessment tool used in other states across the country; the FREE webinar below is an introduction to the program and will speak of the benefits reaped from participation. A handful of communities have mentioned to me interest in this type of a program; if there is additional interest, it might be worth bring the program to OK. I would encourage you to consider participating in the webinar with this purpose in mind.

About the webinar:

First Impressions: A Time Tested Community Assessment Tool

First Impressions is a simple tool that has been around since 1991 and can be used as part of a broader economic development approach. There are many tools in the economic development toolbox that provide objective analysis of data, but few that get at people’s perceptions and attitudes. Both are important. It’s one of the early tools to apply (and re-apply) to help the community establish priorities for: Tourism development, Retail trade development. Business attraction/relocation decisions and Recruiting “talent” to town for employers (public, private for-profit, private non-profit).

This webinar will be led by three Extension educators in three different states that have used and evaluated the use of the program in their state. Participants will learn how this peer learning model can be used effectively to impact positive change within the community.

About the Speakers:

Andy Lewis is a Professor and Community Development Specialist with the University of Wisconsin-Extension Center. He is currently serving as Community and Economic Development Manager in the UW-Extension Office of Broadband Sustainability. He carries out the Wisconsin Idea by conducting applied research and educational programs that address community technology adoption. He has made numerous professional presentations and is the author of several community development publications. Andy is a four-time Chancellor’s Award recipient and was one of the co-authors of the award winning First Impressions community awareness program which has been recognized nationally and internationally for its innovation.

Myra Moss is Extension Educator, Community Development, with The Ohio State University. Responsibilities include program development, implementation and research throughout Ohio. Moss holds the faculty rank of Associate Professor with The Ohio State University. Her areas of specialization include sustainable community planning and development, energy and entrepreneurship. Over the past 13 years she has assisted 10 Ohio communities in the development and implementation of community plans based on principles of sustainability. Moss is a past President and Board member of the Ohio Economic Development Association. Her education includes an MBA and MA from Ohio University and a BA from Long Island University.

Kelly Nix is an Assistant Professor and Specialist at West Virginia University Extension Service in the CRED unit of Community, Economic and Workforce Development. In this role, she focuses her attention statewide on Community Development for community leaders. She is intimately involved in community programs such as First Impressions, Power of Ten, Tourism and other related Community Development Projects. More specific areas of interest and expertise include facilitation, strategic planning, organizational development, team building and project planning. Kelly is a certified facilitator in The Effective Facilitator with Leadership Strategies, Inc. and in Real Colors with the National Curriculum and Training Institute, Inc.

Colleagues -- Here is an announcement for the upcoming eXtension Entrepreneurs and Their Communities webinar series. Please help us to promote this by sharing with your colleagues, clients and collaborators! Apologies for cross-posting.

For immediate release

Webinar Series Opens with Retail Design Principles for Horticultural Businesses

Contact: Mary Peabody, Email: Mary.Peabody@uvm.edu

Mark your calendars! The eXtension Entrepreneurship webinar series is back for our sixth season. All webinars will air monthly on the second Thursday at 2:00pm (ET); 1:00pm (CT); 12:00pm (MT); 11:00am (PT) at https://connect.extension.iastate.edu/etc-cop.

On Thursday, September 13, 2012 we open with a special presentation for entrepreneurs on Retail Layout and Design Principles and Practices for Horticultural Businesses as we consider what customers care about when visiting retail horticultural businesses (garden centers, greenhouses, nurseries, wineries, produce outlets, farmstands, etc).  Whether you have an existing retail outlet or are contemplating one, it is important to know how consumers shop and what tangible and intangible cues encourage...or discourage them from walking through the store. Learn strategies and techniques, ranging from wall color choice to display surfaces, to design and enhance a space consumers find appealing.  Kathy Kelley is a Horticultural Marketing and Business Management Extension Specialist at Penn State University who joined the faculty in 2001. She works with businesses on how to identify target markets and understand consumer needs and desires for goods and services offered by the produce, wine and green industries.

On October 11 our webinar will feature Nancy Bowen, OSU Extension and Julie Miller, Wright State University Business Enterprise Center, who will be presenting, Establishing a Microenterprise Lending Program. Has your community been considering a micro-lending program? For a microenterprise development program to be successful, there must be both access to capital and technical assistance.  The presentation will be a "how to" on development of a micro-lending program that helps to level the playing field for entry into business ownership while strengthening rural economies.  The session will discuss the nuts and bolts of starting and sustaining a program, and anticipated results.

The November 8 webinar will explore how social networking can promote local economies. Casey Hoy, Professor and Kellogg Endowed Chair in Agricultural Ecosystems Management at The Ohio State University will be our presenter this month for . Agriculture in its many forms still accounts for approximately one third of the Ohio economy.  Healthy agroecosystems, however, require a number of connections, or reconnections, of farms with: people and communities, economic opportunities, biodiversity, healthy soils.  Through various grants, the Agroecosystems Management Program of the Ohio Agricultural Research and Development Center is developing social networking tools to build local economies starting with food systems but also the advanced energy and renewable bioproducts that come from agriculture.  This presentation will describe our work in connecting entrepreneurs along supply chains leading to collaborative business networks that improve agroecosystem health.

On December 13 we will host a session on Best Practices in Food Safety for Processors. Londa Nwadike, UVM Extension Food Safety Specialist, will be our presenter as we explore common regulatory issues and safe food handling requirements. Geared to new producers and those considering a food processing business, this presentation will provide information on Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs), which are the basic sanitary and processing requirements necessary to ensure the production of safe and wholesome food. They are a key pre-requisite for HACCP programs and are essential to meeting FDA and USDA food safety requirements.

No pre-registration is required and there is no fee to participate. About 10 minutes prior to the start time simply go the Adobe Connect Pro meeting room at https://connect.extension.iastate.edu/etc-cop. You will be presented with a login screen that has an "Enter as Guest" option. Enter your full name then click "Enter Room" to join the conference. You will be able to hear the audio directly from your computer’s speakers.

Newcomers to online learning are welcome!
