Rural-Urban Commuting Area (RUCA) Codes
A list of rural-urban commuting area (RUCA) codes. RUCA codes classify U.S. census tracts using measures of population density, urbanization, and daily commuting. The most recent RUCA codes are based on data from the 2010 decennial census and the 2006-10 American Community Survey decennial census.

Join the NADO Research Foundation on February 5 from 2:00-3:15 ET for a free webinar highlighting three small towns (Greenville, KY, Claremont, NH, and Millen, GA) that are investing in their downtowns through streetscape improvements, historic preservation, brownfields remediation, and tourism initiatives. Learn how strong local and regional leadership, dedicated volunteers, and a mix of local, state, and federal funding can come together to transform downtowns and main streets, improving both quality-of-life and economic opportunities for residents.

FUNDING
Western Lands and Communities Program Offers Scenario Planning Grants
Western Lands and Communities (WLC), a joint program between the Sonoran Institute and the Lincoln Institute of Land Policy, is seeking communities interested in using exploratory scenario planning to assist in planning or community decision-making processes that engage multiple stakeholders. Scenario planning can explore future conditions related to water resources, energy, and climatic variability or change, as well as how these issues relate to land use planning and community development. Successful applicants will receive scenario planning workshops designed and led by WLC staff and other experts and a grant of up to $10,000 to cover associated costs. The ideal proposal will involve partnerships among various entities, including municipal, county, and regional planning departments and agencies; community organizations; citizen coalitions; and watershed organizations. Grants from the National Endowment for the Humanities - Museums, libraries, and cultural organizations are invited to apply for grants to support public programs in the humanities, particularly those with an emphasis on education and racial equity.
Support for economic, environmental, and social justice projects - The Norman Foundation provides grants for general support, projects, and collaborative efforts. They also welcome innovative proposals designed to build the capacity of social change organizations. Priority is given to organizations with annual budgets of under $1 million.

VA Offers $600 Million in Funding to Support Services for Homeless Veteran Families
The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) has announced the availability of up to approximately $600 million in grants for non-profit organizations and consumer cooperatives that serve very low-income Veteran families occupying permanent housing through the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) program.
Required services include outreach, case management, assistance in obtaining VA benefits, and providing or coordinating efforts to obtain needed entitlements and other community services. Grantees secure a broad range of other services for participants, including legal assistance; credit counseling; housing counseling; assisting participants in understanding leases, securing utilities, and coordinating moving arrangements; providing representative payee services concerning rent and utilities when needed; and serving as an advocate for the Veteran when mediating with property owners on issues related to locating or retaining housing. Grantees also offer temporary financial assistance that provides short-term assistance with rent, moving expenses, security and utility deposits, child care, transportation, utility costs, and emergency expenses.
VA announced the availability of funds today through a Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) in the FEDERAL REGISTER. VA is offering $300 million in FY 2014 funds and $300 million in FY 2015 funds, subject to available appropriations. VA will make award decisions based on a national competition.
