Farm household income is diverse in sources and levels

Because of the USDA’s broad definition of a farm, the population of farm households is economically diverse. In 2011, households of the principal operators of commercial farms-- farms with annual gross sales of $250,000 or more-- had a median total income of $127,009 and a median income from farming activities of $84,649. In contrast, households associated with intermediate farms--those with less than $250,000 in sales whose principal operators considered farming their primary occupation--typically have a loss from farming. The same is true for households of rural residence farms, defined as having less than $250,000 in sales but whose principal operator’s primary occupation is not farming. The typical intermediate and rural residence farm household experienced similar losses from farming, but rural residence farm households had higher median total income ($61,260 compared with $45,889) because of greater off-farm income. Of the three types of farm households, only intermediate farm households had a lower median total income than U.S. households overall ($45,889 compared with $50,054). A chart is based on data found in the Farm Household Well-being topic page on the ERS website, updated November 2012.  See the ERS Charts of Note

New Markets Tax Credit Economic Impact Report 2003–2012 has been issued by a coalition of community development organizations and financial institutions.  It details how an expired federal tax credit has spurred private investment in economically distressed communities to create over 500,000 jobs, generate over $5.3 billion in federal income tax revenue and over $3 billion in state and local taxes – an amount which more than covers the cost of the program as measured in terms of revenue lost by the federal government. Comments requested: Frontier and Remote Areas

USDA Economic Research Service is soliciting feedback on proposed definitions of “frontier and remote areas” (FAR), which would replace the previous definition used for frontier counties. The idea is to develop a measure which can be used for policy, and the proposed definitions use travel time to urban areas of various sizes. Four zones have been proposed, and how Oklahoma would be classified:

% of Land Area in this Classification

% of 2000 Population in this Classification

Zone 1

ZIP Code areas with majority populations living 60 minutes or more from urban areas of 50,000 or more people.

Least remote

56.2

17

Zone 2

ZIP Code areas with majority populations living 60 minutes or more from urban areas of 50,000 or more people; and 45 minutes or more from urban areas of 25,000-49,999 people.

47.1

12.2

Zone 3

ZIP Code areas with majority populations living 60 minutes or more from urban areas of 50,000 or more people; and 45 minutes or more from urban areas of 25,000-49,999 people; and 30 minutes from urban areas of 10,000-24,999 people.

35.7

7

Zone 4

ZIP Code areas with majority populations living 60 minutes or more from urban areas of 50,000 or more people; and 45 minutes or more from urban areas of 25,000-49,999 people; and 30 minutes from urban areas of 10,000-24,999 people; and 15 minutes or more from urban areas of 2,500-9,999 people.

Most remote

30.1

4.1

More information is available, including county maps identifying which counties fall into each zone, is available at: http://www.ers.usda.gov/data-products/frontier-and-remote-area-codes.aspx; you can also check out an article about these zones from the Daily Yonder at http://www.dailyyonder.com/comment-now-far-definition/2012/12/27/5561
